Tales From The Last Frontier
The small towns that dotted the landscape of rural
Texas in the early 1900's - like Medicine Mound - were no strangers
to hardship, drama and intrigue. Follow the links at left to learn
more about this harsh, but fascinating land and the folks that
endured the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, and more.
From the time Mrs. Tidwell burned down the town
to stories of Quanah Parker, "crow blasts", and more, we think
you'll find these stories help give the reader an insightful
glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living under extraordinary
circumstances. Some stories are taken from Bill Neal's fascinating
books, some are gleaned from newspaper accounts, some have been
"handed down" over the years. We think you'll find them all
interesting.
We know you'll enjoy these stories from the past, and invite
you to come back often as more stories are added to the site.
In the near future, we hope to bring our members streaming video
of oral histories from some of the few "old timers" still around
to tell their tales. Remember, the Downtown Medicine Mound Preservation
Group is all about keeping rural Texas history alive through education
!
Of particular interest is the section devoted to
Bill Neal's published works, with direct links to Amazon.com
where you can order these great books and have them delivered
right to your door !
