Someone once said that you almost have to be going to Medicine Mound to get there, since it is a little off the beaten path. Okay, it's a few miles off the beaten path ..... the point is, you'll probably want directions to come visit us.

If you just enjoy a leisurely and scenic drive across the Texas plains, you can start in Vernon and take Hwy. 287 north toward Tolbert. Keep going a short distance out of town on Hwy. 287 until you see FM Road 925. Turn west on FM 925 toward the small community of Farmer's Valley, TX. Soon, you'll see the Medicine Mounds growing larger on the horizon. Now, here's the cool part - keep going east on FM 925 "until the Mounds line up in a row" (according to the locals). Turn north on FM Road 1167 and go about 2.5 miles.........and you'll be in Medicine Mound, TX - Population Zero ! How cool is that ?

Or, you can simply follow Hwy. 287 into downtown Chillicothe, then turn by the First National Bank to go south on FM 91. Follow FM 91 South several miles out of town, and be sure to watch for farm equipment or an occasional cow sharing the roadway. The road takes several twists and turns, but before long you'll see the Medicine Mounds in the distance and a road on your left marked "FM 91 Spur". Turn left on FM 91 Spur and before you can say "Downtown Medicine Mound", you'll be there. Of course, if you get turned around you can always just drive around for a bit until you find us, or ask one of the friendly folks in the area how to get to Myna's place.

Hours of Operation

Through 2007 - Until the Executive Director's position is funded, we can only open by appointment, usually on Saturdays. Founder Myna Potts is willing to make other arrangements, and will open the Medicine Mound Museum for groups large or small. Call (940) 852-5288 to schedule a special tour.

We'll make every effort to make your visit to the Medicine Mound Museum both fun and educational. Heck, we might even share some "rat-trap" cheese and crackers around the old stove - come see us !
