The Original "Strip Mall" : The Cole Building
After a tragic fire destroyed the downtown area
in 1933, two merchants decided to rebuild with material that
would prove significantly more fire retardant than wood. They
had a large quantity of granite cobblestones "imported"
from nearby Oklahoma, which were hauled in on the so-called
"Doodlebug" train. Today, the only buildings left standing are the Cole
building and the Hicks-Cobb General Store (now being operated
as the Medicine Mound Museum). The years have not been kind
to the Cole building, and the roof is now caved in, exposing
the interior to the harsh Texas elements. The Downtown Medicine
Mound Preservation Group is developing a Master Plan that includes
plans for this unique building.

A strict historic restoration of this building
in compliance with standards set forth by the Secretary of
the Interior seems unlikely, so we are contemplating a rehabilitation
project instead. Our group is considering several possible scenarios
- multi-use facility, a gallery for local artisans, gift shop,
etc. Such a facility would, no doubt, enhance the site's appeal
for story-tellers, civic groups, family reunions, and others.
With the recent advances in flat-roof systems
and other construction techniques, almost anything is possible.
In the end, we will work closely with our architect to preserve
the look and feel of this historic structure.
Our group is working with experts to develop
a Master Plan which shall include long range planning
for the Cole building, Museum, and future facilities. Our
main focus will be retaining the look and feel of these
unique buildings as we modernize and expand our facilities.
