For
many folks that did not grow up "down on the farm",
the little village of Medicine Mound, Texas offers a glimpse
at our rural roots - that special era from the early 1900's
to the mid-1960's when the family farm was an integral
part of what we call "rural America". Hardeman County
had long been predominantly Native American country, and
was the last county in Texas to be settled by outsiders.
Life on the frontier was never easy, and most folks toiled
very hard to make ends meet through the Great Depression,
dust storms, droughts and more. There are plenty of tales
to tell, so be sure to check out the stories page.
The
Downtown Medicine Mound Preservation Group was formed in
2006 as a non-profit corporation under existing Texas and
Federal statutes. If it were not for the perseverance and
vision of Myna and a handful of like-minded individuals,
the little ghost town of Medicine Mound would have been
reduced to rubble a long, long time ago. With the last business
closed in the 1960's and virtually all of the town's inhabitants
gone now, Myna has devoted much of her own time and resources
to keeping the memory of rural life in Texas alive for future
generations.
Our non-profit status was
recently granted by the IRS, and our offical Letter of
Determination was issued on June 19th, 2007. To verify
the status of any non-profit organization, you may call
the IRS Customer Service Center toll free at (877) 829-5500.
With hard work, determination, and a bit of luck, the
Downtown Medicine Mound Preservation Group accomplished
this feat in a little over seven months.

We're glad to have you visit our
acclaimed web site, and hope you'll enjoy all the information
presented within. Here's what some folks are saying about
our site....
"I recently found this web site and
the first thing I saw when the site popped up was a picture
of school children in 1949 with both my grandmother, Ona
Lee Prescott and my father, Phillip Prescott standing in
the picture. It brought tears to my eyes! I then contacted
Myna who called me here in Seattle and informed me that
she knew my grandfather Emmett Prescott as well as my grandmother
and father as a child. When I was young we would always
go to Medicine Mound to see my old friends that stilled
lived there in the 1960's." (05/07)
"Wow! I'm impressed by ALL
OF IT!!!! -- The Board of Directors... the stories...
the mission statement... the work that went into all of
it! The website is FANTASTIC and easy to use -- and I'm
grateful that one can browse all of it without becoming
a member, which is truly unique and unusual as websites
go." (10/23/06)
"What an interesting town and project,
and very nice website ! So interesting. Truly, some day (it
will likely be a couple of years away) we would love to
pursue Medicine Mounds as a possible site exhibit on the Texas
Beyond History web site." (11/06)
"The web site is fantastically
presented, well organized, and very informative. It's
very exciting to check in on occasion, see your progress,
and read your blog.... thank you, thank you, for your
time, energy, focus, belief, and commitment to the restoration
of Downtown Medicine Mound." (02/07)
"I particularly like the photos of your artifacts.
You guys did a good job in photographing them. We're looking
forward to adding your content to the Portal To Texas History." (03/07)
"I want to do all I can to help you folks
get your project going. It's all about having the dreams
and you have a awesome one !" (03/07)
"I am so glad that Myna has you to help her.
She, and her work, are rare Texas treasures !" (03/07)
"It
truly amazes me how we all get found on MySpace.
Your site is so authentically cool ! I acted on the 1990
TV series "Northern Exposure" and
if you watched the show you would see that, like you, they
pay a lot of attention to detail. To have the "real
deal"...well man, that is awesome. Thanks 4 finding
me ! You
rock !" (04/07)
