For many folks that did not grow up "down on the farm", the little village of Medicine Mound, Texas offers a glimpse at our rural roots - that special era from the early 1900's to the mid-1960's when the family farm was an integral part of what we call "rural America". Hardeman County had long been predominantly Native American country, and was the last county in Texas to be settled by outsiders. Life on the frontier was never easy, and most folks toiled very hard to make ends meet through the Great Depression, dust storms, droughts and more. There are plenty of tales to tell, so be sure to check out the stories page.

The Downtown Medicine Mound Preservation Group was formed in 2006 as a non-profit corporation under existing Texas and Federal statutes. If it were not for the perseverance and vision of Myna and a handful of like-minded individuals, the little ghost town of Medicine Mound would have been reduced to rubble a long, long time ago. With the last business closed in the 1960's and virtually all of the town's inhabitants gone now, Myna has devoted much of her own time and resources to keeping the memory of rural life in Texas alive for future generations.

Our non-profit status was recently granted by the IRS, and our offical Letter of Determination was issued on June 19th, 2007. To verify the status of any non-profit organization, you may call the IRS Customer Service Center toll free at (877) 829-5500. With hard work, determination, and a bit of luck, the Downtown Medicine Mound Preservation Group accomplished this feat in a little over seven months.

"I recently found this web site and the first thing I saw when the site popped up was a picture of school children in 1949 with both my grandmother, Ona Lee Prescott and my father, Phillip Prescott standing in the picture. It brought tears to my eyes! I then contacted Myna who called me here in Seattle and informed me that she knew my grandfather Emmett Prescott as well as my grandmother and father as a child. When I was young we would always go to Medicine Mound to see my old friends that stilled lived there in the 1960's." (05/07)
